3/27/2010, Hi GOCC.
Our National Corvette Museum Delivery was another Corvette experience of a lifetime. Our 2010 Jetstream Blue Corvette Grand Sport Convertible is awesome. What a way to get a Corvette. We met our host at 7:45 AM and after introductions we had a video on plant tour safety. The plant tour was nearly 3 hours long, no photos allowed, but we saw most aspects of a Corvette build. If you want to see what happens in the building of a Corvette, Dave Ellingson had a DVD on a Z06 build, check with him. After the plant tour, we had lunch at the NCM Cafe and a little time in the NCM Store (You really don't want to know how much we spent in the store). At the announced time of 1:30 PM we started the walk through of our Grand Sport. We did learn a few new things, like wait for the beep before releasing the convertible top button, I failed the first time. We also learned a really neato thing we will share with you C5/C6 folks when we get home, really cool. More photos when we start our return home on Monday of some of what is left of Route 66. Photos below taken by Michael Kane.

3/30/2010, HI Folks,
Day 1 on Route 66: First stop on Monday was Mid America in Effingham, IL, for some Corvette shopping. Those of you on the Caravan last September remember Mike Yager the founder of the company and a real character! We were taking pictures of our car in his "gas station" when he drove up, told us we were in his parking spot -- then he called his photographer, Ed Baumgarten, to come over and take a picture of us with him! If you haven't checked out Mid America please do so at www.mamotorworks.com for all things Corvette. We drove past St. Louis rather late in the day so we didn't get very far down Historic Missouri Route 66, but we did see several old diners and motels including Monroe's 66 Diner billed as having great food and great 50's atmosphere in our guide book. We had planned to eat there, but it was closed and the sign outside said it's for sale. We're trying to stay in authentic old motels, but the Gardenway Motel proved to be a bit too "classic" for us! More pictures coming as we continue down the Mother Road. Sally & Byron

March 30, 2010, Hi GOCC,
Day 2 on Route 66: Today we spent cruising new and old parts of Route 66 in Missouri. We stopped at the Meramec Caverns; too early to tour so just took a few photos. All along the route we will try to take a photo of the state sign on Route 66, hope to get them all. There are of course lots of old buildings, some in good condition, others very poor and yet others just piles of rubble. We had a real cool time at the Elbow Inn. Lunch and photos and the owner gave us lots of history of the Inn. Along the way we came across several gas stations that had been partially restored and took the opportunity on occasion to pull in and do photos. No one seems to mind. So we continue our cruise of the Mother Road.

March 31, 2010, Hi GOCC,
Day 3 on Route 66: Here are a few highlights from the Mother Road through Kansas – only 13 miles through a tiny corner of the state - to the middle of Oklahoma. We visited the Eisler Brothers General Store in Riverton, KS. It's still open for business and doubles as the headquarters of the Kansas Historic Route 66 Association. We also made sure to see the rainbow bridge over the Spring River. It's the last remaining bridge of its kind on the road. Throughout the trip we've been staying on the historic route, following our guidebook and crossing and re-crossing the Interstate – the Super Slab! Countless ruins and abandonned buildings - motels and gas stations – some as old as the 1920's and others from the 60's and 70's. The re-alignments of the road over the years and finally the building of the interstate highway put them all out of business. The Rock Cafe in Stroud, OK, is an exception. This local classic built of native stone is still serving up a good lunch. Sally & Byron
